About this resource
Description
Every chicken begins life inside an egg, and this chicken life cycle worksheet walks students through each stage of that change. Third graders study how a hen lays and warms an egg, how a chick pecks its way out of the shell, how that fluffy chick grows quickly, and how the adult hen finally develops a red comb and lays eggs of her own. Naming the stages in order is the heart of the third grade life science standard, and this printable gives students a clear, colorful way to practice it.
The page opens with four watercolor pictures of the chicken’s life cycle, lettered A through D and printed out of order on purpose. Students read each stage description, decide which picture matches it, and write that letter in the box beside the stage name. Because the pictures are scrambled, the activity rewards careful reading instead of position matching. A short constructed response section follows, asking students to explain where the life cycle begins, how a young chick differs from a grown hen, and why a hen keeps her eggs warm. A complete answer key is included on the second page.
What’s Included
- One printable worksheet page and one answer key page
- Four full-color life cycle pictures: egg, hatching, chick, and hen
- Four stage descriptions with matching answer boxes
- Three short answer questions with writing lines
- A ready-to-print PDF sized for standard letter paper
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Sequencing the four stages builds the science vocabulary students need for life cycle assessments.
- Matching a picture to a written description strengthens close reading and evidence gathering at the same time.
- Writing full sentence answers gives students practice explaining a science idea in their own words.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Use this life cycle of a chicken worksheet as a warm up before a unit on animal life cycles, or as an exit ticket once your class has studied birds. Ask students to cut apart the four pictures and rebuild the cycle as a circle on construction paper, then label each arrow. Pair the page with a class incubator project, a farm visit, or a read aloud about baby animals. At home, families can talk about other animals that hatch from eggs and compare them to animals that do not. Because this chicken life cycle worksheet includes an answer key, it also works well for independent practice, small group review, and homeschool science.
