Sequence of Events Activity

How to teach Summarizing

Using Sequence of Events Activity, students retell familiar stories, including key details with support and prompting.

Being able determine the summarize text that you are reading helps your students understand what they have read. This activity will help your students organize their thoughts as they read.

Read a familiar story and practice how to retell in order using key details and sequence. Next, retell the story using words, props, or pictures. Then, use the organization cards to introduce the transition words First, Next, Then, and Last.

Use this Note Taking and Summarizing Graphic Organizer as an additional resource for your students.

Introduce this activity by reading a short book. Next, ask students what the book was about and how they know.  Then, have students complete the activity independently or with a partner as they read. Finally, students share their summary of their text. Once finished, students continue practicing reading their own texts and summarizing.
