Description
The Short U Words Beginning and Ending Sounds Worksheet asks kindergarten students to do the two hardest parts of sounding out a word at the same time: hear the sound at the front and hear the sound at the end. Six picture cards each show one short u word with the letter u already printed in the middle. The child says the picture name out loud, then writes the first letter and the last letter on either side of it. Because the vowel is given, all of the child’s attention goes to the two consonants, which is exactly where beginning and ending sound work belongs at this age.
The six words are sun, bus, nut, rug, cup and gum. Every picture was chosen so a five year old names it exactly one way, and no two cards start with the same letter, so a student who has learned one sound cannot coast through the sheet. The writing rules are drawn at kindergarten size with room for a full sized letter, and the answer key on page two shows all twelve letters in place. Why This Helps Kids
- It isolates the consonants. Giving the vowel removes the part of a CVC word a kindergartner is least sure of, so the practice lands where the skill actually is.
- It builds toward reading whole words. Once the first and last sound are written, the child has spelled the word, which is the bridge from letter sounds to reading.
- It is spoken before it is written. The directions ask the child to say the name out loud first, which is what makes the sounds hearable.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Do the first card together out loud, stretching the word slowly so the child can hear the three parts of sun. Ask what the mouth does at the start and at the end. For students who are still shaky, cover the ending rule and do all six beginning sounds first, then go back for the endings. This kindergarten beginning sounds worksheet also works as a quick check before a small group lesson, since the answer key makes it fast to mark. Finish by having the child read all six words back to you, which turns the writing task into a reading task.
