Description
This simple machines worksheet helps students recognize the six simple machines in the everyday objects around them. Levers, pulleys, wheels and axles, inclined planes, wedges and screws all make work easier by changing the size or direction of a force, and kids use them every day without noticing. Learning to spot the machine inside a doorknob, a flagpole or a jar lid turns ordinary objects into real science.
About This Worksheet
Students begin by sorting twelve familiar objects from a word box into a chart with one column for each simple machine. Next, they read four short descriptions of tools at work, such as a mover pushing a barrel up a sloped board, and name the simple machine each tool uses. This two-part design moves children from recognizing machines to reasoning about how a machine does its job. It works well as classwork, homework or a quick review at the end of a force and motion unit, and it is written for 5th grade simple machines lessons.
