From our teachers' playbook

Equal groups, big results

What do kids learn about multiplication?

Multiplication starts in 2nd and 3rd grade with equal groups: 4 × 3 means 4 groups of 3. Kids draw arrays, skip count and learn that the order doesn't matter (4 × 3 = 3 × 4). By the end of 3rd grade they know their facts to 10 × 10. In 4th grade they multiply bigger numbers using area models and place value, and in 5th grade they master the standard algorithm with multi-digit numbers. The click moment comes when kids stop counting on fingers and realize 7 × 8 can be built from facts they already know.

Our favorite ways to teach multiplication

Facts that stick and strategies that make sense. These moves cover both.

Skip count with a song

Skip counting songs are multiplication facts in disguise. Sing the 4s once a day for a week and have kids hold up a finger for each number. When you ask "What's 4 times 6?" they count six fingers and know it.

Why it works: a catchy, repeating tune gives the brain a hook to hang words on, so sung text is remembered better (Wallace, 1994).

Area models for big numbers

For 23 × 14, draw a rectangle and split it into 20 + 3 by 10 + 4. Kids fill in four little products and add them. It shows exactly why the standard algorithm works, so it never feels like magic.

Why it works: going from real objects to pictures to symbols is a core recommendation of the U.S. Department of Education's elementary math guide.

Questions parents and teachers ask us

What grade do kids learn multiplication?

Kids start with equal groups and arrays in 2nd grade. Third grade is the big multiplication year, when kids learn facts to 10 × 10. Fourth and fifth graders multiply multi-digit numbers.

What is the best way to learn multiplication facts?

Short daily practice works better than long cramming. Start with the easy facts (2s, 5s, 10s), then use them to build harder ones. Songs, games and flash cards all help facts stick.

What order should times tables be taught?

Many teachers go 2s, 5s and 10s first, then 3s and 4s, then 9s, and finish with 6s, 7s and 8s. Each new set builds on facts kids already know.

What is an area model in multiplication?

It's a rectangle split by place value. For 23 × 14, kids find 20 × 10, 20 × 4, 3 × 10 and 3 × 4, then add the parts. It helps kids understand multi-digit multiplication before the standard algorithm.
