Asking and answering questions is how a young reader checks that a story is making sense. When a second grader stops to ask who, what, when, where, and why, the reading slows down just enough for the details to stick, and the answers have to come from the words on the page instead of from a guess. The Anticipating Ask and Answer Questions Worksheet gives students a short, warm story about a girl counting down the days until her new puppy comes home, then asks them to go back into the text to find the evidence. Anticipation is an easy feeling for a child to recognize, so the story carries the skill without getting in its way.
This 2nd grade reading comprehension worksheet works as an independent reading task, a guided reading warm-up, or a quick comprehension check. Students read the passage on page one, then turn to the question page and fill in the bubble beside the best answer for four multiple choice items that each ask a different kind of question — when, who, what, and where. The final item asks them to write, using two details from the story to show how they know.
