Description
Second graders can hold a real discussion, but only once they know what a good one looks like from the inside. This small group checklist worksheet turns the agreed-upon rules of a class discussion into six short statements a child can check off about their own behavior: waiting for a turn, listening closely, staying on the topic, being kind about other people’s ideas, asking a question when something is unclear, and offering an idea of their own. Self-assessment is the point. The child is not being scored, they are learning to notice.
Use the page during or right after a small group meets. Each statement is written in the first person and sized for a second-grade reader, with a large check box beside it that a child can mark in pencil or crayon. Underneath, a reflection card asks the student to finish one sentence: what they learned from their group that day. Three full writing lines give a second grader room to answer in a whole sentence rather than a single word, which is where the speaking and listening work turns into writing.

Three reasons this 2nd grade speaking and listening worksheet helps kids. First, naming a behavior is what makes it repeatable, and six named rules are far easier to remember than a general instruction to participate. Second, the child does the assessing, so the page builds self-awareness instead of compliance. Third, the sentence at the bottom sends every student away from the group with one thing they can say out loud, which is the habit that carries into book clubs and partner reading later on.
Teachers and parents can build a routine around it. Print a copy for each student at the start of a guided reading rotation and read the six rules aloud together before the first group meets. After the discussion, give students two quiet minutes to check their boxes and finish the sentence, then invite two or three to share. Keep the completed pages in a folder and compare a child’s first week against their fifth.
