Second graders meet that question on almost every reading test, and they meet it most often in short informational passages like the one on this What Are Maps Worksheet. Maps make a perfect subject for main idea practice, because a map is an everyday object a child already knows something about, so nothing gets in the way of the thinking. Students read about what a map is, what its symbols and its key do, and why people reach for a map almost every day.
This main idea reading comprehension worksheet is a three-page, no-prep set. Page one holds a 167-word informational passage written on a second grade reading level, with a full-colour illustration of an open town map, a globe and a magnifying glass.
