From our teachers' playbook

Turn data into pictures

What do kids learn about graphing?

Graphing turns numbers into a picture you can read in a snap. Kindergartners sort and count objects, and 1st graders organize data into up to three groups. In 2nd grade, kids make picture graphs and bar graphs and answer questions like "how many more?" Third graders use scaled graphs where each picture stands for more than one, plus line plots. In 5th grade they graph points on a coordinate plane: (3, 5) = over 3, up 5. The click comes when kids realize a graph tells a story about the data.

Our favorite ways to teach graphing

Graphing is most fun when kids collect their own data. These are the moves we use.

Make a human bar graph

Ask a question like "What's your favorite fruit?" and have kids line up behind a sign for their answer. Count each line, then turn it into a bar graph on paper. Kids see that the bars are just the lines they stood in.

Why it works: going from real objects to pictures to symbols is a core recommendation of the U.S. Department of Education's elementary math guide.

Walk before you climb

For coordinates, model out loud: "Start at zero, walk along the hall first, then climb the stairs." Plot a few points together, then kids plot their own. The walk-then-climb phrase stops the classic mix-up of switching x and y.

Why it works: handing over the work step by step, from teacher to student, is one of the most widely used teaching frameworks (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Graph it, then compute it

Give kids bar graphs that require multiplication or comparison to answer. How many more? How many in all? Mixing graph reading with other math keeps skills sharp and mirrors real test questions.

Why it works: shuffled practice teaches kids to choose the right strategy, not just repeat one, and it improved test scores in research (Rohrer and Taylor, 2007).

Graphing questions we hear a lot

What types of graphs do kids learn in elementary school?

Kids learn picture graphs, bar graphs, tally charts and line plots, and later line graphs, pie graphs and the coordinate plane. Most start with picture graphs in 1st or 2nd grade.

What's the difference between a bar graph and a line graph?

A bar graph compares amounts in different groups, like favorite colors. A line graph shows how something changes over time, like temperature during a week.

How do I teach plotting points on a graph?

Teach kids to go across the x-axis first and then up the y-axis. Practice with a big grid on the floor so kids can walk the points with their feet before plotting on paper.

Can I print blank graph paper here?

Yes! You'll find printable blank graph paper in several grid sizes, plus blank coordinate grids and pie graph templates.
