From our teachers' playbook

Read the world one map at a time

What do kids learn about maps?

Map skills grow step by step. Young learners draw maps of their room and learn that a map is a picture of a place from above. They use a compass rose for north, south, east and west, read a map key and find places on a simple grid, like B3. Older kids label continents and oceans, use map scales to measure distance and find places with latitude and longitude. They read special maps too, like climate and population maps. The click moment is a child guiding you somewhere using only a map.

Our favorite ways to make map skills stick

Kids learn maps best by making them and using them. These moves do both.

Map your space

Kids draw a bird's-eye map of their bedroom or classroom with a key for each symbol. Then they trade and find something on a partner's map. Making a map first makes every other map easier to read.

Why it works: kids understand an idea best when they touch it, then draw it, then write it, the order the U.S. Department of Education recommends for elementary math.

Compass rose on the floor

Tape a big compass rose on the classroom floor and label the walls N, S, E and W. Call out directions and kids point or walk. Once directions are in their bodies, they're easy on paper.

Why it works: pairing a picture with each word gives kids two ways to remember it, a well-tested principle of how people learn (Mayer, 2009).

Grid treasure hunt

Give a map with a letter-number grid and mix questions: "What's at C4? Which direction is the park from the school?" Mixing grid and direction skills prepares kids for latitude and longitude later.

Why it works: shuffled practice teaches kids to choose the right strategy, not just repeat one, and it improved test scores in research (Rohrer and Taylor, 2007).
