Description
A fable is a short story that ends with a lesson, and Aesop’s tale of the hungry fox and the grapes he cannot reach is one children remember for life. This fables the fox and the grapes worksheet gives second graders an original, on-grade retelling of that fable and then asks them to do what the standard actually asks for: recount what happened, in order, and say what the story teaches. The passage is written at a second-grade reading level and paired with a full-page illustration of the fox stretching up toward the vine.
Page one holds the picture and the story, with no writing on it, so a child can simply read. Page two carries the questions: four fill-in-the-bubble items that walk through the fable from the first glimpse of the grapes to the fox’s parting words, and one written response asking what lesson the fable teaches. Ideas for Teachers and Parents

For the written response, collect a few answers and read them back anonymously; second graders are often surprised how many different ways one lesson can be said.
