About this resource

Description

How to teach Formal vs. Informal Speech

Using the Formal or Informal English Activity, students determine contexts that call for formal or informal English language is to be used.

Being able to speak in front of a group of people takes a lot of practice. Your students will need to know how to speak to different audiences. Depending on the audience, the language and vocabulary is different. This activity will give your students understanding what formal or informal situations to say specific words or phrases.

Students will sort words and phrases into formal and informal categories. Then, students will explain why the words were sorted in to the different categories.

Introduce this activity by students sharing words or phrases they would say to their friends vs. their teacher. Next, students discuss why we don’t say the same to both groups. Then, students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students create skits using phrases from the activity to demonstrate when to best use them. Once finished, students write about a topic in using formal and informal language.
