How to teach Fables and Folktales
Using What’s the Moral of the Story Activity,students recount fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.
Being able determine the summarize text that you are reading helps your students understand what they have read. This activity will help your student to make sure that they retell a full story.
Students will read, “The Lion and the Mouse” and use the graphic organizer to determine the moral of the story and how it is conveyed through the text. Students can continue to practice determining the moral of other fables, folktales, and myths using the same graphic organizer.

Introduce this activity by reading a short book. Next, students share what happened first, next, then, and finally. Then, have students complete the activity independently or with a partner.
