How to teach Summarizing
Using this Class Critics Summarizing Activity, students use the various graphic organizers to help organize their thoughts and summarize the main points of media. The forms of media they may want to summarize may include a read-aloud, a class discussion, a video clip, or an article.
Being able to summarize is an important skill that determines whether or not your student is comprehending what they are reading, watching, or listening to. This activity will provide your students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their comprehension and summary skills.
To use this Class Critics Summarizing Activity, provide your students with a specific media type, and let them demonstrate their summary skills to you by using one or more of the various graphic organizers to organize their thoughts.

Introduce this activity by reading a short book, having a class discussion about a current event, watching a short clip about content-specific material, or reading an article together. Next, students share what happened first, next, then, and finally. Then, have students complete the activity independently or with a partner. Finally, have students practice their writing skills by putting their organized information into paragraph or essay format. Once finished, students continue practicing reading their own texts and summarizing.
